This is shaping up to be a great week: the iPad gets released in the USA this Saturday and to kick off the week, Apple finally releases Mac OSX 10.6.3. Let me tell you it's a whopping great update, so put some time aside when installing, depending on the speed of your connection.
So far I've done my workhorse, my 2006 black MacBook and am about to do my 2010 Mac mini. There were absolutely no issues downloading and installing the update, save the time involved and so far everything is fine. Further reports as I discover improvements, but I certainly don't anticipate any problems.

EyeTV and the Apple Remote
Have you got a Mac running eyeTV? Do you also have an Apple Remote?
I just got wind of a handy trick.
Hold down "menu" on the remote while eyeTV is running. This will launch the eyeTV menu instead of Front Row and will allow you immediate access to your channels and all your recordings, among other options.
Nifty!

No More Gadgets For Me
Not real gadgets, mind. rather the ones that (used to) appear on this page -radio stations and the ilk. This morning I found that my blog had been hijacked by some other blog which led to an appalling advertisement to learn Chinese. Suspecting that it was the gadgets that I'd placed here, I instantly removed them and that turned out to be 100% accurate.
So. They're. History.

Penguin Eggs
I've been looking for a CD copy of Penguin Eggs for a long time but, as I do own an original vinyl copy, I wasn't prepared to stump up 10GBP or more for it. Enter eBay and I scored me an original, sealed CD of said item for just three of your English pounds, free postage. It arrived yesterday.
I don't care much for English folk music, though I owe it a debt of gratitude for wakening up these pop-orientated ears in the late 60s via Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span and albums such as Morris On, to folk music in general. I moved on rapidly to the music of my own country instead and these days can't really bear "Liege and Lief', no matter how many times they remaster it. The rest of it, the stuff of Viz-mockery, the tankards of real ale, wooly jumpers, hey nonny nos, fingers stuck in ear, people called Doug, comely maidens thickening around the waist, young men scouring Merrie England in search of the elusive Cuckoo's Nest, the intrusive English 'R' between two vowels -I can't be doing with any of that.
Penguin Eggs is different. In the first instance, it's Nic Jones, a guitar player of impeccable taste and talent. Secondly, it's a fine collection of songs presented in the simplest of fashion -a sympathetic female voice on backup, the odd harmonium*, concertina** or recorder. Deceptively so, for it warrants repeated listening and never fails to reveal new aural treasures, little touches that bring a smile to your ears.
Listening to it yesterday, albeit on bog-standard redbook CD, I was struck by how good it sounded, rich beautiful, guitar. They sure knew how to record LPs in those old Topic days! This album has never failed to entrance me and I listened gleefully to this 40 minute-plus album of gems, such as Courting is a Pleasure, Farewell to the Gold, The Humpback Whale (containing the words of the title, "Penguin Eggs") and the opener, Canadee-I-O, which impressed Bob Dylan so much, he also chose to record it on his "Good As I Been To You" acoustic album, using much the same arrangement, years later.
If you like acoustic music, then I urge you to secure a copy. It's music Jim, but sadly, not as the kids know it.
A final word for poor old Nic Jones. Injured massively in a car crash in 1982, it effectively ended his career and he recorded no more.
Here is the sleeve of this landmark release:
Lest anyone think I've been too hard on English folk music I also like Billy Pigg (The Border Minstrel) and the High Level Ranters. And this one, June Tabor with Martin Simpson, "A Cut Above".

* Melodeon. Must try harder.
** No concertina.

Safari update 2
Safari drove me round the bend yesterday.
Trouble was, it wasn't only Safari: whatever malaise had struck it had also spread to Chrome and Firefox. The 3 browsers weren't unusable but all 3 would hang and freeze after just 30s to 2 minutes usage. A quick trip to Discussions at apple.com/support revealed that I wasn't alone and many people were in a similar situation after the recent update to Safari.
What to do? Popular opinion recommended deleting all plug-ins for the browser and re-installing them 1 by 1, but I didn't go that tedious route in the end. I simply re-downloaded (!) the browser from http://www.apple.com/safari/download/ and re-installed it over the top of the existing one and I'm happy to report that so far, touch trackpad, it seems to have weeded out the corruption.
Now what the hell is up with Tweetdeck?

EirText Pro
Users of the SMS app for iPhone will be pleased to know that an update
has just been released fixing some of the recent issues with the app.
It may be necessary to delete the existing buggy version before
applying the new one. First impressions are that this is the most
reliable version of this app yet, very stable, with several new
features.
Now available in the AppStore.

Safari update
Is the latest version of Safari (4.0.5) a bit buggy? It keeps hanging
on the simplest of exercises. Time to run permissions, methinks.

Wii
Some time today, I intend getting back on the Wii, finally opening the DVD of WiiFit Plus that I bought and did nothing with.
The reason for this inertia is the nasty cold experienced here in Ireland this winter. I appreciate that it's nothing compared to say, Canada or various parts of Russia but still, it was, a) cold as mentioned and b) not ideal for motivation. Hence, the couch beckoned, the Wii fell into disuse and my waistline continued to expand as my faceline continued to disappear into blubber. Well, enough. Posting here is forcing me to revive my Mii and get back into the fray. I can't lie to myself.

The Hard Times Cookbook
Here's the book wot I wrote and wrote about earlier. In all good bookshops now. On the web. Amazon. eBay. Everywhere. Thousands of them. Cheap. Buy. Never regret.
New Layout
Well, I certainly prefer the look of this -what do any of you who glance at this, think? I suppose Google Buzz may help me garner more readers.
Last.FM and Ceadshearc
Incidentally my ID on last.FM is "ceadshearc" -some shi'ite had already collared "culabula". A fatwa has been issued. Should you wish to listen my library is usually on 24/7 with in excess of 20k songs scrobbled already. Wonder if there is a last.FM gadget for blogspots?
Timestamp
I just worked out how to change the time zone and thus the timestamp. It's under formatting. Who knew?
W'rqed!
Goodness, that seems to have done it. The ads are largely gone. This could prove exciting, and addictive.
M'baq.
Blogs, eh? Time I revived this one. What happened, right, is that increasingly, each and every summer, I become allergic to Ireland PLC, or so it would appear. What began as an exagerated hay fever bout has now metamorphosed into one big giant excuse to lie in bed and indeed, at its most extreme, fall into hospital. I'm considering avoiding Ireland during the summer months.
The blog fell into disuse. Immediately following the illness it became necessary to finish off my second book which I'd fallen behind on owing to the disability and get it out in time for Christmas. Which I did. You may now buy mulitple copies for all your friends which is what all my friends did.
Anyway, I now note that my blog appears to have been hijacked by Apple Inc. Not my doing. I don't get this at all -is it something to do with Google Ads? Why then, aren't I making any money from it? I will try and populate the blog with loads of posts to banish them. Besides, I want to sell gazillions of stuff to afford an iPad, so I'll probably try and do that here.
